In this award address I will describe synthetic methods that allowed us to prepared and characterize early- and mid-transition metal complexes containing metal ligand multiple bonds. Some of these approaches involve oxidation or reduction reactions to achieve elimination or abstraction reactions concurrent with formation of the metal-ligand multiple bonds.  Key to our strategies is the ability to jump between even- and odd-electron species, ultimately to achieve our target molecules. The first component of my talk will focus on synthetic strategies (in addition to some characterization techniques) used to achieve some target molecules having reactive metal-ligand multiple bonds with metals such as Sc, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Fe and Co.  The second component of my lecture will discuss some of the applications (stoichiometric and catalytic) involving these reactive moieties, and their ability to active, transfer and/or functionalize small molecules.
