Several studies have shown that transition-metal complexes bearing outer-sphere pendent base moieties have enhanced rates in acceptorless dehydrogenation (ADH) catalysis relative to non-functionalized analogs. However, more systematic exploration is needed to determine how altering the proton affinity and basicity of these pendant base groups affects overall catalytic performance. In this presentation, we will report on our ongoing investigations into two routes for the synthesis of a series of new base-functionalized 2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)biphenyl (BIPHEP) derivatives. Efforts for the characterization of all novel compounds using 2D NMR experiments will be reported. The ruthenium(II) complexes of these ligands will allow us to probe the role that proton affinity and basicity of the pendent groups may play in ADH catalysis.
