PdO/ gamma-alumina catalysts were synthesized by a modified vortex/slurry/incipient impregnation method. The catalysts were calcined at 250 0C and 500 0C and the catalytic activities for methane combustion were determined. The methane conversion was 100% at 250 0C and 275 0C for the catalyst calcined at 250 0C whereas the catalyst calcined at 500 0C showed 48% and 82% at these temperatures. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed that the proportion of PdOx was higher in the catalyst calcined at 250 0C compared to presence of more PdO in the catalyst calcined at 500 0C. This indicates that calcination temperature had a perceptible effect on the conversion in the lower temperature range due to the increased ratio of PdOx/PdO. The Pd loading also influenced methane conversion in the temperature range 250-275 0C. The conversion was higher with 4% Pd compared to 1% or 2% Pd but there was no difference in conversion between 1% and 2% Pd loadings. The effects of calcination temperature and Pd loading were negligible above 300 0C.
