Cold water algae are underexplored as sources of marine natural products. Extracts of Ulva lactuca, a green macroalgae from the Gulf of Maine, possess antibiotic activity against clinically relevant Staphylococci strains, including methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus Newman. In this preliminary study, the post-harvest preservation methods of U. lactuca were compared. Upon determining that there was no significant difference between the antimicrobial activity of freeze dried and oven dried U. lactuca organic extracts, research was directed to fractionating the extracts and characterizing the bioactive compounds present. Outcomes from spectroscopic analysis, disc diffusion assays, and assessment of antioxidant activity are reported.
