Triclosan an antibacterial has been extensively used in household products. This excessive usage has let it drain into waterways and its toxicity to aquatic environments is well known. Triclosan is considered to alter the levels of Thyroxine (T<sub>4</sub>) and estradiol in humans and is an endocrine disruptor. In our studies we evaluated the interaction of Triclosan with the enzyme Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase 1 b (PTP1b). PTP1b is a well-known negative regulator of insulin. Recently PTP1b has been implicated in various other processes in the central nervous system and in cancers. Preliminary studies have indicated that Triclosan inhibits PTP1b by 30% at 50mM concentration. Mechanism of inhibition of PTP1b by Triclosan is underway and results will be presented.
