A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of solvent on the mechanochemical synthesis of a microporous metal–organic framework Cu3(BTC)2 for hydrogen storage. It was found that, both the presence of water of hydration in reactants and addition of a small amount of solvent prior to grinding, could improve the crystallinity of Cu3(BTC)2 formed in the final products. However, the latter was found to be more effective in improving the crystallinity of Cu3(BTC)2, which leads to better properties in specific surface area and thus hydrogen storage capacity.
