The damaging effect of UV radiation on viral nucleic acids is an effective route to inactivate viruses and reduce risks associated with virus infections. This presentation will review the reactions that occur in viral nucleic acids as a result of exposure to UV radiation. Our team has used this mechanistic information to develop models for predicting virus inactivation by UV254. We conducted a systematic literature review of UV254 inactivation rate constants for a wide range of viruses. We then used the high-quality inactivation data to develop and evaluate inactivation models using linear and non-linear approaches. We will present the top-performing models for ssRNA and dsDNA viruses. They were applied to predict inactivation rate constants for two viruses that had not previously been reported on and were measured experimentally to test model performance. Finally, we applied our models to predict the UV254 rate constants of several viruses for which high-quality UV254 inactivation data are not available.
