Evidence shows that diverse teams are more innovative and more highly cited, but science is still a long way from equal representation. In 2018, a data scientist found we were still 50 years from gender parity in the authors of chemistry publications (but 258 years away from gender balance in physics). In 2019, the Royal Society of Chemistry reported than an inflexible and unsupportive academic culture was driving talented women chemists elsewhere. Whilst the 13.3% of the US population identify as African-American, the National Science Foundation have identified that only 1.6% of chemistry professors at the top 50 schools are Black. As scientific researchers, we know that in order to try and solve problems, we first need to understand them. In this talk we'll look at why certain groups are underrepresented in academia and discuss what we can do to build a more equitable scientific community.
