Terpenes are a critical class of phytochemicals that contribute to the efficacy and experience of cannabis inflorescence use. Unfortunately, the inherent volatility of terpenes leads to a reduction of inflorescence terpene content over time, directly impacting product quality and efficacy. There are no widely available methods to preserve, replenish, or control the terpene content of cannabis inflorescence. A novel packaging system was investigated to address these issues and improve inflorescence product quality and the outcomes of medical and recreational cannabis users. Cannabis inflorescence samples were stored using the novel system, in airtight packaging in the presence of external terpenes. Control samples were stored in the same packaging without external terpenes. Inflorescence samples of differing chemotypes, age, processing conditions, terpene profiles, and content were investigated. Terpene content of the samples was quantitatively determined using headspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS GC-MS) after various storage durations. All inflorescence samples stored using the novel packaging system possessed a higher terpene content as compared to their corresponding controls. Furthermore, a 5.9-fold increase in inflorescence terpene content was achieved for inflorescence depleted of terpenes after storage using the novel system. The terpene profiles of inflorescence samples from two separate harvests were selectively tuned, reducing the percent difference of the sample’s terpene profiles by 39.5%. A successful proof of concept for a novel approach to preserve inflorescence terpene content was achieved. Positive results were obtained for all sample types investigated, validating the robustness of the system. Immediate applications of the novel system include maintaining the native terpene content of inflorescence at the time of packaging, replenishing terpene content to inflorescence depleted of terpenes, and reducing inflorescence terpene content lot-to-lot variability. Future applications of this system include the ability to selectively tune the terpene profile and aroma of cannabis inflorescence.
