The synthesis, characterization, and spectroscopic investigation of M–O–M and M–OH–M units encapsulated within the hexacarboxamide cryptand “Bowman” scaffold will be presented. These compounds afford an understanding the nature of oxygen atom bridged bimetallic centers within cryptate scaffolds in which the metal-metal distance is highly constrained. Furthermore, due to the unique structural, spectroscopic, and electronic features of the genuine oxo- compounds, the discovery path of a cautionary tale will be presented.
