Authors who change their name for any reason – including (but not limited to) gender identity, marriage, divorce, or religious conversion – risk not receiving proper credit for their scholarly contributions or face having to publicize personal information to explain the change. Many authors choose to abandon their previous work altogether to avoid any further burden or trauma. While name changes present an obstacle for many researchers, it is an issue that disproportionately impacts transgender scientists and women in conjunction with life events. ACS Publications’ Author Name Change Policy aims to remove barriers to inclusion, professional mobility, and author credit by offering authors the option to update their name on prior publications without the need for an erratum/correction, legal documentation, or co-author approval. Shaina Lange (Senior Publications Ethics Manager at ACS Publications) will discuss publisher name change policies, alongside other positive changes and opportunities within the industry, in support of a more inclusive and equitable environment for all researchers.
