Background
There are many pre-operative factors that are seen to be vital in the outcome of the patients who will undergo transcutaneous aortic valve replacement (TAVR). One of them is the severity of aortic valve calcification which appears to be correlated with severity of paravalvular regurgitation.
Method(s)
This is a retrospective-prospective, cross sectional study among patients who underwent transcutaneous aortic valve replacement. Baseline demographics and echocardiogram were obtained and recorded. Aortic valve calcification was measured using the using the semi-quantitative 5-grade scoring system for visual assessment of the degree of aortic valve calcification (AVC) for echocardiographic images (Yousry et al., 2012) while paravalvular regurgitation was measured using the the circumferential extent (CE) score, CD-based score and LAX score based on the Abdelghani et al (2016).
Result(s)
All forms of calcification in the aortic valve is associated with paravalvular regurgitation. This was also seen in all patients using the CoreValve but not as prominent in the Evolut and Lotus type.
Conclusion(s)
There is a strong correlation between severity of aortic valve calcification and severity of paravalvular regurgitation.
