During a severe accident of a nuclear power plant, fission products (FPs) may be released and transported to the containment. The containment spray can be utilized to remove aerosol of FPs and retain them in the sump. Therefore, it is important to predict aerosol removal efficiency by spray droplets. To develop an analytical model, experiments of aerosol removal by spray in TOSQAN (IRSN) \[1, 2\] were especially useful since not only aerosol characteristics but also droplet size and gas velocity field were measured. In their experiments, droplets did not impact the side wall of the vessel and spray coverage ratios (spray volume/ vessel volume) were low. By contrast, the real containment spray is required to cover entire space of the containment as much as possible and the ratio are much higher. When droplets impact the side wall with a high spray coverage ratio, a gas circulation induced by the spray will behave differently from that in the condition without the droplet impaction where a stable gas circulation is expected. The aerosol removal phenomenon may be changed with different gas circulation behaviors. To develop the model from the viewpoint of high spray coverage ratio, experiments in TOSQAN were conducted with comparable spray coverage ratios to the containment spray. Droplets were observed to impact the side wall and those remaining in the atmosphere were measured. Particle size and concentration changes were also measured during spray activation. In addition, the aerosol removal was analyzed by a CFD calculation.
