Active magnetic bearings(AMBs) have received a lot of attention from its advantages of delivering extraordinary efficiency, wide operating range, and superior durability.  Other advantages include low noise and vibration, no lubrication system required, and environmentally friendliness. They have been widely applied into turbines, compressors, motors, generators, blowers and pumps. This presentation will consist of

-          AMBs advantages and applications

In this section, advantages and applications of AMBs will be introduced. The current AMB applications will be talked.

-          Different types of AMB actuators

Different types of magnetic bearing actuators will be discussed. Guidelines will be provided on how to select AMB actuators to serve different purposes.

-          System components and working principles

In this section, AMBs system and component including sensor, controller, power amplifier, filters will be discussed. The working principles of the AMBs system will be presented.

-          Nonlinear analysis of AMB systems

Most of the current AMB system design and analysis are based on linear models, which could be inaccurate and even misleading. In this section, system nonlinearities of the AMBS systems will be talked in this session, including nonlinearities from magnetic force in the actuator, sensors, power amplifiers, and auxiliary bearings. Nonlinear rotordynamic analysis model will be presented. 

-          Optimization design of AMB systems

Different optimization design methods and tools using genetic algorithms will be discussed and compared in this section.

-          Design guidelines and standards

The AMB system design standards from both API617 and ISO14839 will be introduced. General guidelines of designing magnetic bearing systems, including vibration and sensitivity limits will be provided.

Through this presentation, audience will have a clear idea of what magentic bearings are, where they are used, what are the advantages of them, and how to design and optimize the magnetic bearings system.
