Centrifugal compressor is the key component in the SCO2 Brayton cycle process, its thermodynamic design and performance prediction under variable operating conditions are concerned a lot with consideration of the particularity of SCO2 properties. At the same time, the general techniques, including CFD, testing, and analysis with loss models, are applied to evaluate the compressor performance. In addition with CFD analysis on the performance of the compressor, the flow loss models from air compressors were studied and extended their application to the SCO2 compressors, including incidence loss, blade loading loss, skin friction loss, tip clearance loss, mixing loss, disk friction loss, vanless diffuser loss. These models were investigated and compared to get the performances of two different SCO2 compressors with 2D and 3D centrifugal impellers. The CO2 quality was got based on the NIST database. It was added in the numerical simulation process. The combination of the loss models provided the similar results as those from numerical simulation. Compared the performance evaluation by loss models at different compression starting points with that by the CFD results, it was found that the deviations between the performance evaluations by the loss models and CFD results were divergent under different inlet conditions. Owing to the significant change in the physical properties of SCO2 near the critical point, different compressor inlet conditions should be correspondent to different choices of the mathematical loss models. The performance evaluation method proposed in this paper is more suitable to use the compression starting point close to the critical point. Finally, it is proposed here that a set of thermal design and performance prediction method that is more appropriate for SCO2 compressors combined with the given mathematical loss models. The method is better to confirm the safe and stable operation range of the SCO2 compressors.

This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
