Laser Doppler Velocimetry or Anemometry (LDV/LDA) and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurement techniques have been extensively used by fluid mechanic researchers for the last 25-30 years. However, in the literature it is hard to find works related to simultaneous LDV and PIV measurements. Now, such simultaneous measurements can be very useful for validation experiments and when correlating high temporal resolution measurements with large structures of the flow. Performing simultaneous LDV and PIV measurements can be a challenging task due to the differences in temporal and spatial resolution of each technique, as well as the requirements for adequate signal. Even so, simultaneous hot-wire and PIV measurements is even more difficult to perform. Unlike hot-wire, LDV is a non-intrusive technique that is unaffected by PIV laser light-sheet heating. Furthermore, hot-wire measurements are adversely affected by seeding particles in the flow required for PIV. In the present study, we discuss several practical considerations for performing simultaneous LDV and PIV measurements. We completed two separate experiments, each with different seeding densities, flow velocities, and working fluids (i.e. water and air type of applications). With these data sets, we will be studying the effects of temporal and spatial interpolation, up/down sampling, PIV window size as well as overlap on the simultaneous signals.

Supporting the need among researchers worldwide for additional online and multimedia content, ASME now offers the ASME Conference Video Collection. This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
