Impingement jets are widely used in erosion investigation as it is easy to control impact angle and particle velocities in experiments. Additionally, fluid flow velocities and particle velocities near target walls are previously measured using Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV), Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV). These experimental results are available that can be used for validations. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique has been used to simulate slurry flow in this geometry to investigate erosion process and develop erosion equations. By solving Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with turbulence models, time-averaged fluid flow is revealed, and thus time-averaged erosion rate can be obtained by tracking particles in the fluid flow field. However, unsteady fluid flow structures in the geometry and its effects on erosion process remain unclear. In this study, Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is used to simulate unsteady fluid flow in different impingement jets in Eulerian scheme. Then particles are tracked transiently to simulate unsteady erosion process in Lagrangian scheme. Finally, erosion equations are used to calculate erosion rate. The LES Eulerian-Lagrangian erosion modeling are further validated by the experimental data. It was found that unsteady properties can be well resolved by using this method, and the accuracy of erosion prediction can also be improved.

This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
