Numerous aerospace applications require the integration of three-dimensional supersonic propulsion nozzles as their contour contributes greatly to the airframe/propulsion integration that enhances the performances of the propulsive engine. Several nozzle concepts that promise a gain in performance over existing conventional ones have been investigated, and various kinds of design methods based on classical nozzle geometries have been developed. These approaches usually require lengthy operating and turn-around times consequently incurring high costs. A simple method for obtaining wall contours of supersonic nozzles of arbitrary exit cross sections from determined axisymmetric flow-fields is presented. The method of characteristics in two-dimensions is applied to compute the axisymmetric nozzle flow-field having the required overall nozzle length and exit Mach number from which the desired 3-D shape is later generated. Choosing the desired cross-section shape at the exit, its geometrical parameters are traced back to the throat to constitute the walls of the desired supersonic nozzle contour. Using this approach, several geometries have been designed and are presented. The preliminary results gathered indicate a smooth transition of the shapes generated from the throat to the exit of the supersonic section of the nozzles. A comparison between detailed three-dimensional flow-field predictions and experimental measurement will constitute the next step to be carried out.

This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
