Traditionally experimental fluid mechanics diagnostics for hydrodynamic, marine, and biological applications have been carried out in water tunnel facilities, where the instrumentation is safely located outside of the facility. Due to practical constraints, this has often resulted in limited ability to conduct experiments at large scale, or has forced the experimentalist to make other concessions. To overcome these restrictions, submersible diagnostics systems have been developed, allowing for experimentation in facilities such as towing tanks. These systems began with Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) systems, and expanded to 2D/Planar and Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) systems, and recently expanding to volumetric PIV systems. These tow tank diagnostic systems are regarded as very unique and highly specialized, in no small part due to the exceptionally distinctive facilities which house them. TSI has provided numerous LDV and PIV systems for underwater applications to date. This talk offers a summary of the challenges faced for experimentalists in underwater applications, respective solutions to overcome these challenges, a historical overview of these systems and their development, as well as a description of some of the more unique facilities, systems, and applications. The current state of the art will be discussed, as well as a look forward to next steps in this unique and exciting area of fluid mechanics diagnostics.

Supporting the need among researchers worldwide for additional online and multimedia content, ASME now offers the ASME Conference Video Collection. This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
