Detailed understanding of jet flows is important to the design of chemical reactors, jet mixers, polymer mixing and injection molding devices. The flow behavior of jets can be impacted by inlet conditions, swirl, co-flow, confinement, composition and rheology. Previous work mostly focused on round Newtonian jets. However, numerous materials display yield-pseudoplastic non-Newtonian characteristics such as slurries, pastes, plastics, electro-rheological fluids, suspensions of solids in liquids, and emulsions. A yield-shear-thinning material behaves like a solid under the application of small stresses and flows in a nonlinear manner, as opposed to the simpler linear Bingham fluid, once the applied stress exceeds a critical value called the yield stress. Familiar yield-shear-thinning materials include mayonnaise, ketchup, toothpaste, gelled products, and paint. The current study focuses on the influence of a yield-shear-thinning rheology on the flow behavior of submerged annular jet. Non-Newtonian jet flows are found in important industries such as food processing, biotechnology, plastics and polymers, pulp and paper, and petrochemicals. Environmental applications of non-Newtonian jet flows include the mobilization of the settled sludge and mixing of the radioactive nuclear waste stored in numerous underground tanks at various U.S. Department of Energy, DOE, sites. The governing fully-elliptic partial differential equations of motion will be used here to model annular non-Newtonian jets and provide accurate and valid flow field information. The Herschel-Bulkley constitutive equation will be used to model the yield-shear-thinning rheology. It will account for a rate-dependent viscosity in the form of a power law, i.e., a non-linear model that quantitatively describes real materials behavior better than the previously used linear Bingham model. The impact of a non-linear viscoplastic rheology on the flow characteristics of submerged annular jets will be investigated.

About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences.
