Origami provides a rich library and unique benefits for developing deployable structures. Comparing with the vast amount of progress in pattern design, static configuration analysis, and folding kinematics, research on the dynamics of origami deployable structures still remains at the early stage. This paper presents our effects in developing an effective and addressable dynamic model for studying the transient dynamics of origami deployable structure. Specifically, a Miura-ori tube consisting of stacked Miura-ori (SMO) cells is studied in this research. The Miura-ori tube, in an ideal scenario, is rigid-foldable, flat-foldable, and with a single-degree-of-freedom (DoF) folding mechanism, which, however, cannot be fully satisfied in a real prototype. Hence, five assumptions are proposed for dynamic modeling, which, on one hand, retain the key characteristics of folding, on the other hand, significantly simplify the problem. With the five assumptions and based on the Lagrange Equation for the general case, the governing equation of the Miura-ori tube is obtained. Taking a six-cell Miura-ori tube as an example, numerical analyses reveal that in addition to the decayed vibration in the folding direction, the tube would also exhibit transient vibration in the direction perpendicular to the folding direction. The transient dynamics can be quantified by the overshoot and the settling time. Moreover, by increasing the additional elastic stiffness that is used to constrain the deviation between the folding of adjacent half SMO cells, the multiple DoF folding dynamic model can degenerate into the single DoF folding scenario, in which only vibrations along the folding direction is possible. The constructed model and the preliminary results would provide useful guidelines for designing and optimizing the origami-inspired deployable structure.

This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
