This paper presents the extension of the fuel operability range of the standard SGT-300 Industrial Gas 

Turbines, Dry Low Emissions combustion system for High Calorific Value fuels. 

A successful product development program has demonstrated improved fuel flexibility of the SGT-300, Dry Low Emissions combustion system. This was achieved using the engine’s current standard combustion hardware. Consequently, the SGT-300 Dry Low Emissions combustion system is now released to operate on fuels covering a temperature corrected Wobbe Index between 25MJ/m^3^ and 74MJ/m^3^, which corresponds to a blend of Grade A LPG (60% C~3~H~8~ and 40% C~4~H~10~).  

High pressure rig tests were carried out at simulated engine operating conditions for a range of load and ambient temperatures. Instrumentation included emissions monitoring, combustion dynamics, combustor liner wall temperatures and in-burner metal temperatures (to monitor flashback).  

The test campaign used various blends of propane and butane corresponding to Grade A LPG, HD5 LPG and HD10 LPG compositions. Further tests covered a wide High Calorific Value range by mixing Natural Gas with Grade A LPG in increasing volumes. 

The results show that the standard SGT-300 Dry Low Emissions production burner can reliably operate on High Calorific Value fuels, with a temperature controlled Wobbe Index up to 74MJ/m^3^. NO~x~ emissions, which increase with increasing heating value, are higher than for Natural Gas but significantly lower than for Diesel and other Heavy Fuel Oils. Note that in an industrial gas turbine application the primary intended use of High Calorific Value fuels is as a backup for Natural Gas, i.e. instead of liquid fuel.  Testing has demonstrated that it is possible to increase the CO turndown control of the Gas turbine across a wider load range for High Calorific Value fuels compared to Natural Gas. The temperatures of the combustion components when operating on the High Calorific Value fuels are within the life acceptancy criteria for the Siemens SGT-300 Dry Low Emissions Gas Turbine.
