Recently, pressure gain combustion (PGC) has been proven as one of the practical solution to increase gas turbine cycle efficiency due to the lower entropy generation in the combustion process. However, highly unsteady flow produced by PGC is difficult to manage in order to extract its energy. Any outlet restriction downstream of PGC, such as turbine blades, affects upstream flow field which may cause huge amount of energy loss in the form of shock waves. Additionally, in this harsh flow field, experimental measurement and data acquisition has its own complexity specifically in terms of flow visualization. Hence numerical simulation can provide important insights into PGC exhaust flow while interacting with vanes. In this paper, a Rotating Detonation Combustion (RDC) and a row of nozzle guide vanes have been modeled based on the available experimental setup. URANS simulation was done for different guide vanes arrangements and blade solidity at RDC downstream representing different outlet restrictions. The results in terms of total and static pressure were compared with the experimental ones. The simulation was repeated for RDC exhaust flow as the boundary condition taken from the literature as well. Pressure loss and entropy generation, flow unsteadiness and temperature were measured along the domain in order to evaluate the effect of vanes exposed to RDC flow. Furthermore, fluctuation damping role of the vanes was studied which is very detrimental for turbine performance. Flow field at upstream of the vanes was studied to evaluate presence of any compression waves which can affect experimental measurements. This RDC exhaust flow investigation is an important step from turbomachinery point of view in early turbine design phase which provide details of blade behavior in such an unsteady flow.
