For decades, alternative fuels have been investigated to achieve high efficiency and low emission combustion in IC engines. Oxygenated fuels such as alcohols and ethers have shown advantageous benefits for their use in engine combustion. Polyoxymethylene dimethyl ether (PODE) fuels contain a high amount of oxygen (up to 50% by mass) and improved volatility as compared to diesel. In this work, the combustion behavior and emission characteristics of neat PODE3 and PODE3/diesel blends are investigated on a single-cylinder high compression ratio diesel engine. Four fuels are investigated in this work; baseline diesel fuel, neat PODE fuel, and two PODE/diesel blends at a ratio of 10% and 50% PODE by volume. Engine tests are conducted at an engine load of 6 bar and the injection timing is modified to achieve an optimal combustion phasing. The intake oxygen concentration is manipulated via EGR to compare the resulting engine performance, stability, and exhaust emissions among the test fuels. The test results show that blending PODE fuels with diesel is an effective technique to reduce soot emissions with minimal effect on NOx emissions. The investigation is extended to a higher engine load of 10 bar IMEP to further assess its impact on conventional diesel combustion.

Supporting the need among researchers worldwide for additional online and multimedia content, ASME now offers the ASME Conference Video Collection. This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
