Surge relief valve is widely used in oil pipeline transportation. When surge occurs in the pipeline, the surge relief valve shall be opened in time to release the high pressure oil into low pressure in the pipeline, so as to ensure that there will be no large pressure shock in the oil pipeline which will cause pipeline damage. In the working process of surge relief valve, the main valve can not be closed normally or closed too fast often, which has caused great hidden danger for pipeline oil transportation. In order to solve the problem, this paper firstly discusses the structure and principle of the surge relief valve, which is composed of the main valve and the pilot valve. Combined with the working process, this paper analyzes the stress and working state of the main valve and the pilot valve of the relief valve, and then establishes the mechanical model of the pilot valve. This paper focuses on the analysis of the parameters affecting the closing of the main valve during the closing process of the surge relief valve. The correlation of the parameters of the pilot valve to the closing of the main valve is obtained. The model of relief valve is modeled and simulated in detail by AMESim software. This paper analyzes the dynamic characteristics of the surge relief valve, and verifies the correctness of the main parameters and laws that affect the closing of the main valve by using the model. According to the analysis of the mechanical and motion state of the pilot valve, the friction of the pilot valve in the surge relief valve, the throttle diameter of the inlet impulse pipe, the diameter and length of the outlet impulse pipe have a great impact on the closure process of the main valve. The effects of these parameters on the closing behavior of the main valve are analyzed. The simulation results show that the main valve can not be closed when the friction of the pilot valve is large. However, when the main valve can be closed normally, the friction of the pilot valve has no significant effect on the closing time of the main valve. In this case, the closing time of the main valve decreases with the increase of the orifice diameter of the inlet impulse pipe; when the diameter of the outlet impulse pipe is small,  the closing time of the main valve increases with the increase of the diameter of the outlet impulse pipe, and finally tends to a maximum time; when the length of the outlet impulse pipe is small, the closing time of the main valve does not change with the length of the outlet impulse pipe, but If the length of the outlet impulse pipe is increased continuously, the closing time of the main valve will decrease with the increase of the impulse pipe.
