Glass is used extensively as windows in structures, cars, and airplanes because of its transparency and high producibility. However, because glass is a brittle material with low practical strength, it is important to improve the glass plate resistance to puncture impact loading for security. Although it is known that fitting a polymeric film to the glass plate is an easy and effective way to reinforce it against impact loads, the reinforcing mechanism is still unclear. In this study, puncture impact behavior was investigated experimentally with a glass plate fitted with a polymeric film.

By dropping the steel weight, impact loads were applied to the glass specimen through the steel incident bar. The incident bar has a 10 mm diameter and its tip is rounded with a 5 mm radius. The drop height of the weight was 1 m above the top of the incident bar. The specimen was a 6 mm thick float glass plate fitted with 0.19 mm thick polymeric film at the non-impact surface. For comparison, the glass plate without film was also tested. Cramped by the supporting frames, the specimen was exposed in the area inside the circle of 20 mm radius centered at the impact point. During the experiment, strain histories were recorded by strain gauges at the incident bar and the specimen surface. The applied impact load was estimated from the strain gauge outputs at the incident bar. The stress distribution and crack propagation in the thickness direction of the specimen were observed using the photoelastic method and shadowgraph method. The fringe pattern of photoelasticity and shadowgraph were recorded by the high-speed video camera.

The impact load profiles and the displacement of the incident bar at its tip was estimated with one-dimensional wave theory from measured strain histories of the incident bar. The estimated load corresponds to the load applied to the specimen. The load profile changed its gradient several times indicating the deformation and the fracture process of the specimen were changed. In the specimen with film, it became a different load profile in the maximum value and duration. It is thought that the fragments are retained by the film after the glass is broken, the deformation of the film, the delamination of the film with the glass, and the fracture of the film affected the puncture resistance of the specimen to cause the difference of the load profile. The load-displacement curves were then obtained from the estimated loads and displacements. From the obtained load-displacement curves, puncture energy was obtained and evaluated.
