A PRELIMINARY STUDY OF COMBINED HEAT AND POWER IN A FACILITY

ABSTRACT

Rapid economic growth has increased the need for efficient electrical and thermal usage world-wide to not only save in energy but also be competitive in the industry. Optimization of the current energy sources ought to be carried out in order to minimize the use of fossil fuels in the coming decades in a manner that is economically feasible. Cogeneration of electricity and heat, also known as combined heat and power, is one such technique, which makes efficient use of fuel and gives the most usable energy output for medium to big facilities, as they have a greater proportion of thermal loads than individual residential units. Combined heat and power is a renewable energy generation method to optimize the fossil fuel usage and transforming the facility to be more resilient during breakdowns and natural calamities of the current day trend by generating electricity onsite and being grid independent. This paper reports a preliminary study of a facility in Tennessee, USA, to determine the feasibility of developing Combined heat and power at the site and calculating its simple payback period. The system of the current analysis is of natural gas operated, comprising a boiler and a steam turbine, the impact of natural gas and utility costs on CHP are studied with time. This study shows how the calculations are carried out by considering the primary energy consumption costs (electricity to fuel price ratio) for determining the modeled payback periods and basic measures to be taken into consideration for a Combined heat and power installation at interested facilities. Moreover, the impact on the environment with and without combined heat and power is calculated based on energy utilization. Emission (CO~2~, NO~x~, SO~x~) estimates in the case of Cogeneration are far less due to the efficient utilization of waste heat onsite, which goes useless in a traditional power plant set up. Cogeneration proved to be an eco-friendly alternative for the institutions having year- round energy requirements, as single fuel type is used for generating electricity and thermal energy required for the site.
