In terms of engineering, friction and consequent wear occur as a result of the contact between two machine parts that move relative to each other. During the work of two contacting surfaces, these factors interact with each other, and eventually, the working conditions change over time. It is not possible to eliminate friction and wear completely under today's conditions.

The economic implications of tribology are also significant with recent research showing that several percents of the Gross National Product (GNP) could be saved in many industrialized nations by solving tribological problems. This could be as simple a solution as the application of a low friction coating to a surface, the amelioration of the lubricant at the sliding interface, or the reduction in wear by changing the system design.

Tribology is a truly interdisciplinary science and must, therefore, be treated as one. Many engineers are unprepared for solving tribological problems because they only see one side of the problem. Every year, more than 10 million tons of mineral lubricants and hydraulic fluids end up polluting the environment. Besides, Tribology societies should highlight to the utmost economic advantage of tribology. This includes tribological technology that mimics living nature (biomimetic surfaces) and thus is expected to be environment friendly, the control of friction and wear, which is of importance for energy conservation and conversion, environmental aspects of lubrication, and surface-modification techniques and tribological aspects of green applications.

Keeping in mind these, this work is going to point out the journey of Dr. Said Jahanmir in the tribology world will be pursued especially the design, commercialization, and use of processes and products that are technically and economically feasible while minimizing risk to human health and the environment, among chemical engineering and materials science, and other aspects related to the mechanics and physics of surfaces fields.

To accelerate scientific and technological breakthroughs, he aims at having a context of knowledge: the gap between scientific insights and technological realization should be bridged. Especially in the tribology field as application-oriented, care has to be taken that his scientific findings actually can lead to real-world applications. One of his established success stories is about Water lubrication of silicon nitride in sliding. It has attracted much attention from the tribological society as well as his other tribological topics.

The author proposes an insight that the plenitude of papers that deal with friction, adhesion, wear, and lubrication was published by him and co-workers to serve as inspiration for tribology, which they have been available in a language or an environment accessible for tribologists.

This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences.
