The peridynamics theory of solid mechanics is a nonlocal reformulation of classical continuum mechanics suitable for material failure and damage simulation. Peridynamics has been applied to a wide variety of problems, including failure and damage in composite laminates, crack propagation and branching in glass, crack nucleation, impact damage, fracture in polycrystalline materials, structural health monitoring, and damage in concrete, among many others. Peridynamics was originated by Silling in 2000 and, since then, the peridynamics community has experienced an incredibly high growth rate. In this presentation, we will analyze the evolution of the field of peridynamics from its inception. 

Scientific collaboration has become prevalent in almost every field. By 2013, team-authored papers made up around 90% of science and engineering papers published in a given year, and this was an increasing trend. Consequently, analyzing the collaborative dynamics of different scientific fields has become a common task in scientometrics, a subfield of bibliometrics which studies the scientific literature. Though it is not the sole indicator of collaboration, co-authorship data between scientists is commonly used to analyze the collaborative dynamics in a certain field. Complex networks have frequently been used to model scientific collaboration and co-authorship. This approach constructs a network whose nodes are scientists and whose links connect two scientists if they have co-authored a paper (perhaps with additional co-authors). Weights can be placed on the links in order to distinguish stronger collaborations from weaker ones. Constructing such a network allows to use a variety of network analysis techniques to reveal insights into the structure of the scientific collaboration within a certain field. This approach also allows to analyze the evolution of a certain field by examining the evolution of network features over a certain time frame. In particular, we can analyze the growth of a new scientific field, such as peridynamics, from its inception by examining a network representing its scientists.

In this work, we study the evolution of the field of peridynamics from its inception by analyzing networks that represent the scientists in the field. To do this, we examine many network properties such as centrality, clustering, and degree distribution. We perform an evolutionary analysis of network properties from 2000 to 2019 to identify how the networks have grown and changed over time. We then examine the networks using local techniques in order to identify the most collaborative scientists and groups of scientists in peridynamics in recent years. Finally, we provide link recommendations for the scientists in peridynamics, using the network properties as well as tools from persistent homology.

Supporting the need among researchers worldwide for additional online and multimedia content, ASME now offers the ASME Conference Video Collection. This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
