Decades of natural observations, experimental studies and proof-of-concept trials have demonstrated spatial repellent products can reduce mosquito biting and prevent mosquito-borne human diseases, such as malaria and/or dengue. However, evidence gaps remain to support full assessment by the WHO Vector Control Advisory Group (VCAG) regarding the health value of a spatial repellent product category. This presentation will provide recent updates on the role of spatial repellents for disease prevention that align with WHO goals, status of the knowledge-base on the product class, and timelines for ongoing clinical trials that are meant to fill the gap towards a global policy endorsement for the use of spatial repellents in public health programs.
