Solar-to-chemicals, including H2O splitting, CO2 reduction, and N2 reduction are promising in aqueous solution in electrochemical cells. Anodic TiO2 nanotube (TNT) film has been regarded as a flexible and functional electrode, also with the advantages of a high surface area, fast electron transfer, low charge carries recombination rate and almost zero onset potential. To narrow the wide bandgap of pure anodic TNT, a two-anode reduction (TAR) technique was adopted to prepare, in one step without the existence of gaseous hydrogen, black TNT co-doped with carbon and nitrogen.1 The functional groups existing on the TAR sample help to enhance the lifetime of the charge carriers, and the π orbitals of the groups act as electron transfer channels to facilitate the electron transfer. Both the anodic oxidation method and the TAR technique are not limited to TNT/Ti but to a full range of functional oxide structures on various metals and binary and ternary alloys.2 The presentation will focus on these highly ordered TNTs on flexible Ti foil and discuss the most recent progress in synthesis and modification of black TNTs for photoelectrochemical water splitting.
