Triphenylamines (TPA) are excellent electron donor molecules which are used in organic magnetic materials and organic dyes due to their ability to form radical cations. Our group has incorporated of TPAs as covalent C-shaped spacers within <i>bis</i>-urea macrocycles that assemble into columnar structures. These robust crystals have 1D channels that exchange guests by single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations. Here we investigate their utility to capture iodine, 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole and 2,5-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone vapor as well as iodine from cyclohexane solution. UV-irradiation with 365 nm LEDs activates the host and triggers the electron transfer process from host (donor) to guest (acceptor) through space. This electron transfer process is examined by diffuse reflectance spectra and cyclic voltammetry. TD-DFT calculations further provide evidence for the formation of a charge separated state in their excited state. Overall, this study will help us obtaining a better understanding photodriven electron transfer in the supramolecular complexes and further apply this knowledge to improve designs for magnetic and conductive materials.
