Crown ethers have gained profound research attention due to their application in optical molecular sensors, photo-controlled ionophores, ion transporter and catalysis. Crown ether based optical molecular sensors are expected to be used in compact devices for colorimetric or luminescent analysis of metal ions and some organic cations. The application areas for photo-controlled ionophores include development of new ion-conducting light sensitive materials, photo-controlled ion transport and ion separation. Pyrrole and its derivatives have been found as an integral functionality in numerous natural products. Not surprisingly, the preparation and modification of pyrrole has been the focus of many research programs with concomitant attention devoted to the synthesis of pyrrole-incorporated therapeutics, supramolecular constructs, and functional materials. Dipyrromethanes and dipyrromethenes which contain two pyrrole units are building blocks for porphyrins, porphyrin analogue, BODIPY and Aza BODIPY. Functionalized pyrroles are also potentially attractive structures for the development of new optical sensors and for application in biological systems. In this context, crown ether containg single pyrrole unit (Figure 1) and two pyrrole units (Figure 2) have been synthesized. The former one show fluorescence and able to generate stable radical cation and the later one act as an optical sensor for Cu<sup>2+</sup> cation.
