Two 5-(benzylidene) derivatives of thiobarbituric acid with different substituents on the phenyl rings have been synthesized by condensation of thiobarbituric acid with 4-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde or 4-methoxybenzaldehyde. The optical properties of prepared compounds have been investigated in organic solvents (acetonitrile and DMSO), as well as in mixtures acetonitrile/water and DMSO/water. Obtained results based on analysis of the emission wavelength and intensity of fluorescence confirm the presence of emissive aggregates in poor solvents showing a phenomenon of aggregation-induced emission.  The solvatochromic behavior of 5-(4-dimethylaminobenzilydene)thiobarbituric acid in THF:water solvent system has been investigated and bathochromic shift in positions of absorbance maximum from 475 to 515 nm with increasing the concentration of water from 0 to 80% has been demonstrated.
