With the growing interest in NIR-emissive dyes for biological imaging, it is of great importance to improve upon their photophysical properties such as fluorescent quantum yields using informed chemical modification.  Spectroscopic techniques such as steady-state and time-resolved excited-state absorption and fluorescence are valuable tools that help guide synthetic design, as are quantified measurements such as quantum yields and excited state lifetimes.  Here, the photophysical performance characteristics of a series of cyanine and squaraine dyes in various solvents are compared and their properties compared to standard reference dyes.  It was found that the choice of solvent greatly affected the magnitude of fluorescent quantum yields.
