In this work, complex ions containing vanadium were adsorbed and concentrated from tailings leaching solution by spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPB). SPB with polystyrene core and poly[2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl trimethylammonium chloride] (PMAETA) brush layer were prepared by photo-emulsion polymerization. The complex ions containing vanadium leaching solution was prepared by grinding vanadium bearing tailings. Sodium hydroxide was added to adjust pH value of leaching solution, and sodium metavanadate aqueous solution was separated from the supernatant. Due to the enhanced Donnan effect, the positively charged PMAETA SPB can absorb and concentrate negatively charged metavanadate ions even with very low concentration. This work may provide a new method to recover vanadium from low grade tailings.
