In 2011, information about 700 known disinfection by-products (DBPs) were collected and analyzed by Susan D. Richardson. In fact, more and more DBPs were identified after that, and the number of known DBPs must be far more than 700. It is essential to understand the information of known DBPs, which can provide reference for the research of identification, formation on emerging DBPs. Therefore, an internet database of 3096 DBPs (1248 have definite names and 1848 have only chemical formula) was constructed, which contains the physicochemical properties, formation pathway, toxicity, and other information.<br/>The clues of known DBPs mainly came from the reviews of S.D. Richardson about DBPs, in which emerging DBPs were summarized every two years. The information of the structure, analytical method and formation pathway generally came from the literature about new disinfection by-products, and other information were obtained from some chemical websites, such as chemspider, chemical book, and so on. The known 3096 DBPs information were collected and arranged into an EXCEL document, and were upload to a website <i>http://dbps.com.cn/</i>. Through this web database, these known DBPs were easy to be searched and summarized. Additionally, the molecular weight range, element constitution, functional groups, carbon frame structure of the known DBPs were compared and analyzed, and the results were shown in graphical abstract. From the graph, it can be seen that halogen (Cl, Br, I) and N are the main elements of DBPs besides C, H, O. Among them, halogen-containing DBPs account for about 73%, N-containing disinfection by-products is 10%, and the proportion of substances without halogen and N is about 18%. For the range of molecular weight, about 46% are in 100-200, and 200-300 are the next. In the 1248 known DBPs with definite structure, 61% are straight-chain compounds, and 29% are aromatics. Moreover, the functional groups were also summarized, and acid compounds account for the majority in the 23 functional groups.
