Magnesium ferrite nanoparticles-bentonite magnetic nanocomposite (NC) was nanofabricated for evaluating its adsorptive and photocatalytic potential using martius yellow dye (MY) and Cd (II) ions, respectively. FT-IR and TEM studies of NC confirmed the loading of MgFe2O4 nanoparticles over the bentonite layers. XPS studies predicted the presence of different elements on the surface of NC. The linear and nonlinear regression analysis were employed to accurately design the mechanism behind the adsorption and photocatalytic system. Nonlinear regression of the isotherms and kinetics was established using Solver add-in of MS-Excel and best-fitted model was validated by comparatively analysing both the modeling methods on the basis of statistical parameters as well as error functions (SSE, χ2, G2, RMSE). The comparative analysis of linear and nonlinear modeling indicated that the equilibrium data for MY and Cd (II) ions was best represented by linear type-II Langmuir equation (Fig. 1). Therefore, the optimization of the models depicted the monolayered adsorption. While, the kinetics of both the adsorption and synergic studies followed the linear pseudo-second-order (type-I) kinetic model, which specified the interaction of the adsorbates with two active sites of the adsorbent. The synthesized NC showed the maximum adsorption capacity of 789.64 mg/g and 1073.28 mg/g for MY and Cd (II) ions, respectively. GCMS analysis was also performed to describe the degradation mechanism of the dye. Thermodynamic parameters specified the exothermicity and spontaneity of the process. Desorption studies confirmed the recyclability of the prepared nanoadsorbents for multiple cycles. Thus, present studies demonstrated the effectiveness of the prepared NC for adsorption as well as photocatalysis.
