Fluorinated compounds are ubiquitous in the pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and polymer industries because the introduction of fluorine into organic molecules often leads to significant changes in their physical, chemical and biological properties. However, the unique properties of fluorinated building blocks also make their purification and utilization difficult. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an exciting new class of highly-tunable, porous, crystalline nanomaterials that self-assemble from metal secondary building units and organic linkers. Here we discuss how MOFs with coordinatively unsaturated metal centers can be engineered to strongly and selectively bind fluorinated molecules, enabling their purification and use in organic synthesis.
