Lozenges are solid intraoral dosage forms intended to slowly release the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) into the oral cavity. Aspartame is found in many pharmaceutical drugs to mask the bitter taste of the API. While aspartame is not an API, its dissolution rate can be used to monitor the dissolution of any API from a solid lozenge. One type of lozenge is the menthol lozenge. Aspartame can be used as a surrogate for menthol. The rate of dissolution is determined by a dissolution profile which shows the percent dissolved versus time.  This dissolution test monitors any changes in the drug formulation or dissolution procedure that will affect the rate of dissolution.  The aspartame is quantified by ultra-HPLC. Results from different formulations and procedures are reported.
