Lanthanide (Ln) doping of inorganic crystals are integral for the advancement of optoelectronic technologies. Specifically, Ln doping of metal halide perovskites have drawn considerable attention due to the expansion of their optical properties. Here, we investigated the visible and near-IR emission of Er3+ doped cesium lead chloride CsPbCl3 (CPC) and cesium cadmium chloride CsCdCl3 (CCC) bulk crystals. Using the vertical Bridgman technique, Er: CPC and Er: CCC crystals were grown using commercially available starting materials. Optical transmission measurements showed characteristic absorption bands from intra-4f transitions of Er3+ ions for both investigated crystals. Following direct intra-4f Er3+ excitation produced predominantly green emission bands from the 2H11/2/4S3/2 -&gt;4I15/2 transition and weaker red emission from the 4F9/2 -&gt;4I15/2 transition. In addition, characteristics Er3+ near-IR emission at ~1540 nm (4I13/2 -&gt;4I15/2) was also observed. The 1540 nm emission is of potential interest for integration of halide perovskite semiconductors with optical fiber networks. Besides direct intra-4f excitation, UV optical pumping in Er: CCC also resulted in visible Er3+ emission lines with distinct spectral features not observed before. On the contrary, Er: CPC did not exhibit any Er3+ emission under UV excitation. The pump wavelengths dependent spectral features observed for Er: CCC suggests the incorporation of Er3+ into different locations within the host crystal lattice.
