Depolymerization of lignin from wood leads to a mixture of phenolic hydrocarbons. Their conversion to the corresponding oxygen-free aromatic hydrocarbons by hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is an appealing source of renewable hydrocarbons. We perform this reaction under mild conditions, catalyzed by iridium supported on metal oxides (Nb2O5, ZrO2, TiO2, Al2O3, MgAl2O4). The effects of hydrogen pressure, reaction temperature and support are studied through in-situ sampling, and the reaction pathway is investigated on phenolic model compounds. High aromatic selectivity (&gt;85%) is achieved after full conversion under mild conditions. This demonstrates the suitability of oxides-supported iridium as remarkably efficient catalysts for HDO reactions.
