The detection of pharmaceutical compounds in the environment has concerned scientists over the recent decades, and despite low concentrations, there is uncertainty over the implications of these emerging contaminants to the health of humans and wildlife.  The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanisms and kinetics leading to the direct and indirect photodegradation of a set of fluoroquinolone pharmaceuticals under various conditions, with a special focus on the role of reactive species including hydroxyl radical and singlet oxygen.  The effect of dissolved organic matter on the degradation kinetics and mechanisms of enoxacin removal was also investigated.  Rates of reaction with hydroxyl radicals are on the order of 10^8 L/mol-s, while rates for singlet oxygen are several orders of magnitude lower depending on the compound. It was also determined that dissolved organic matter may increase or decrease the rate of reaction depending on the concentration, and optimal concentrations were determined. Finally, quenching studies were performed to gain further insights into the mechanisms of degradation.
