Natural products are unique, complex structures that can serve as inspiration for new crop protection active ingredients. A synthetic equivalent to the natural macrolide UK-2A began with identification of the putative functional pharmacophore through a modular strategy and continued with the simplification of the lead analog through a bioisostere replacement approach. The resulting molecule, florylpicoxamid, displays a spectrum of disease control on an assortment of crops and is partially derived from renewable raw materials. This study offers a new strategy for the discovery of natural product synthetic equivalents.
