Sub-stoichiometric titanium oxide (TiOx) recently appeared as promising cost-effective electrode material for non-selective oxidation of organic pollutants. The objective of this study was to identify reaction mechanisms involved in the degradation and mineralization of organic pollutants according to the nature of both electrode material and target pollutant. Various plate and porous TiOx materials were investigated and compared with boron-doped diamond electrode used as gold standard. TiOx materials were obtained by plasma deposition on Ti substrates. Probe molecules and quenching experiments were used for identification of reaction mechanisms, including direct electron transfer as well as hydroxyl radical and active chlorine mediated oxidation. Correlations were made with electrochemical and material characteristics. The effectiveness of electrode materials was then investigated for the removal of pharmaceutical pollutants and treatment of real industrial effluents. Finally, accelerated lifetime tests were performed in order to study the influence of electrode ageing on reaction mechanisms.
