Much more oxygen element content in low rank coal result in a waste of hydrogen when coal is thermally converted into liquids. If oxygen reaction could be controlled further to remain more in the oil as phenols, and which might realize the valuable utilization of oxygen content via mixed phenols extraction, which will probably increase the economic value of the process. And the oxygen exists in the forms of phenolic hydroxyl group, carboxyl group, ether bond, methoxy group and carbonyl group in raw coal, whose reaction being studied deeply and clearly is beneficial to get the high efficiency target products. The accurate analysis of oxygen-containing compounds in coal-based liquid qualitatively as well as quantitatively is very difficult using gas chromatography (GC) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS), because of the overlapping peaks in the total ion chromatogram of oil products. Recently, two-dimensional gas chromatography (2D-GC), a new chromatographic technique, get a great development, which is a kind of off-line analytical method, and also suitable for disassembling the overlapping peaks consisted by the substances with large content and complex components. Because there are two chromatography columns in serials to effectively improve the separation efficiency of GC, which is the premise of accurate qualitative analysis. Besides this, the quantitative error of the area normalization results by mass spectrometry (MS) is greater than that by flame ionization detection (FID), which is the reason why flame ionization detection (FID) is chosen to be a quantitative detector while mass spectrometry (MS) is prefer to be chosen as a qualitative detector. And all of these (2D-GC coupled with MS and FID (2D-GC-MS/FID) to the detection of oxygen containing compounds in oil and chemical titration coupled with FI-IR for the oxygen containing functional groups detection in solid product) will effectively improve the accuracy of quantitative description of oxygen element transformation process. On the basis of quantitative analysis of oxygen element distribution, it will be helpful to understand the process of coal thermal conversion from the chemical bond level and develop coal conversion technology.
