Copper(II) and zinc(II) dithiocarbamate complexes were synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic techniques and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The compounds were used as single source precursors, thermolyzed at different temperature to prepare hexadecylamine, oleyamine and octadecylamine capped metal sulfide nanoparticles. We report the effect of thermolysis temperature, time, and capping agents on the morphological and optical properties of the as-prepared metal sulfide nanoparticles. High resolution transmission electron microscope micrographs revealed nanoparticles with average particle size of 3-31 nm for the as-prepared metal sulfide nanoparticles. The highest photocatalytic degradation efficiency of 85% for crystal violet, 99% for methylene blue and 81% for rhodamine B were obtained from the as-prepared nanoparticles. The as-prepared nanoparticles were also effective for the degradation of ternary dyes mixtures of crystal violet, methylene blue and rhodamine B and showed good stability and recyclability. The anticancer studies of the as-prepared metal sulfide nanoparticles were evaluated against three cancer cell lines. The compounds showed high to moderate cytotoxicity against the cancer cells. Some of the compounds are much more potent than 5-fluorouracil and <i>cis</i>-platin which indicates they can be consider for further development as potential therapeutic agents.
