Sulfur dioxide, or SO2, is a highly significant naturally occurring gas, used in the industrial production of sulfuric acid, as a preservative in the food and wine industry, and as a reducing agent in laboratories. Although these broad-based applications have significant commercial relevance, poorly controlled SO2 concentrations can lead to air pollution, acid rain, and other environmental problems. As such, there is a continued need for the detection and quantification of SO2 in complex environments. Herein we report the development of a β-cyclodextrin functionalized Whatman filter paper, that together with potassium permanganate responds to the presence of low (ca. 10 ppm) concentrations of SO2 with a visible color change. Such colorimetric changes have significant potential application in the development of practical devices that can be used in the food industry as well as in monitoring environmental SO2 pollution due to human activity.
