One of the best strategies to prevent sexual harassment is to cultivate an open and inclusive research environment. In a heathy culture, people will be comfortable bringing their “full selves” to the lab and sharing any concerns about uncomfortable situations, which can often be resolved before they become legal matters. In my presentation, I will share efforts to create an inclusive environment in the Rosetta Commons research community and in my home department of chemical and biomolecular engineering at Johns Hopkins University. Our work has included creating a code of conduct, fostering an active diversity committee, creating artwork celebrating women on the Hopkins campus, promoting affinity groups and outreach, developing inclusive mentoring and leadership practices in our faculty, and celebrating contributions with awards. Our efforts span intersections of gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, and LGBTQ+ status, and they impact teaching, recruitment, trainee and faculty mentoring, collaboration, and ultimately the excellence of our research.
