Scalable decarbonization efforts necessitate the synthesis of clean energy carriers such as hydrogen and CO2 capture and storage. One of the highly transformative approaches to produce hydrogen with inherent CO2 capture involves integrating the water gas shift reaction, which involves producing CO2 and H2 from CO and H2O with inherent CO2 capture via carbon mineralization to separate inorganic carbonates while directing the synthesis of high purity H2. The use of earth abundant calcium and magnesium-bearing silicates which react favorably at the conditions representative of the water-gas-shift reaction of pCO2 of 10-20 atm and temperatures of 200-250°C to capture CO2 is reported. Thermodynamic calculations that demonstrate the feasbility of these reaction pathways is discussed. Multiphase chemical transformation mechanisms that occur as CO2 is captured and mineralized are reported. These studies provide the basis for using renewable carbonaceous sources including biomass or waste plastics as the energy sources for producing hydrogen with inherent carbon capture.
